hush that fuss

Since my family and I started going to church on a regular basis, I feel that God is working in our (mine and my husband’s) lives tremendously. I feel so close to my husband at church. God’s amazing love is so powerful and strong, it’s truly indescribable. I know one of the things I pray most about is for God’s strength to work through me to raise God-fearing children. I want my family to thirst for the love of God and beg for his mercies.

With all of that said, I fall short on a daily basis. I'm guilty of "losing my cool" with my kids at times. What mother hasn't? That guilty and nauseating feeling when you know you just yelled at your own flesh and blood because you are tired, because they spilt milk on the floor, or even dripped pee on the toilet is sometimes too much to bear. This subject has weighed heavy on my heart as I have found myself more and more stressed out trying to work full-time, have a side business, and go to school. Who wouldn’t be in the nut house already? The point is my number one job is to be a Godly wife and mother to my family. I want my house to beam with the glory of God and I want my children to feel safe and secure at all times. I want to not only teach my children how to love in a Godly way, but I want them to see it daily through the love my husband and I give to them.

Today, I want to take the pledge to not yell. I want to take the leap of faith that God will provide me the wisdom, strength, and patience to always see my kids as just that, kids. No more crying over spilled milk, literally. This is not to say that I’m throwing discipline out the front door, because children need boundaries and they must learn to follow rules, but I want to discipline my children in a way that will teach them in a productive way and I want my children to know forgiveness, because God knows I’ve had to ask for it daily. Between proper discipline (instead of yelling) and the understanding of forgiveness, my prayer is for my children to want to work harder to be Christ-like.

I once saw a quote that said, “Families that pray together, stays together.”

Lord I pray, oh how I pray, that my sweet family always turns to you, our Lord and Savior, for guidance and also to learn to lean on each other for love, guidance, and wisdom. I pray that your merciful hands cover my family always and that we open our eyes to you always and forever. In your name, amen!

mother's day {2013}

I had a spectacular Mother’s Day yesterday.  I was completely spoiled by Avery and Chris (Trevor was with his mother).

I woke up to Avery bringing me a card in bed, and then he told me to come quick, there was a “noder surprise."  I walked into the living room and found a Kitchen Aid mixer sitting on my ottoman.

Happy squeals, including the happy dance and clap too.  My husband knows the way to my heart.  I definitely love my nifty gadgets.  I purposely don’t watch the QVC channel as I would be broke as a joke from all the must-haves.

The hubs made me breakfast and we all got ready for church.  Afterward, my family came over to grill out and enjoy the gorgeous day we had.

Today, I want to share a few thoughts that came to me yesterday during church.  I really enjoyed the sermon and as I sat in church, my mind kept thinking of Mary, the mother of Jesus.   I thought about her anxiously awaiting the birth of her son.  These thoughts took me to the days leading up to Avery’s birth.  I remember the nervousness and excitement all rolled into one giant feeling.  I remember wondering about this thing folks called “motherhood.”  I also remember the days after Avery was born.   There was (and still is) more love than I ever thought my heart could have for his sweet soul. A few years later, I met Trevor (my husband’s son).  I knew the love for my own son, but I fell in love with sweet Trevor.   I didn’t carry him for 9 months, and I haven’t known him from his first breath, but I will love and care for this sweet boy until my dying breath.

God’s love has supplied me with the gift of these precious angels.  As our pastor preached yesterday, it’s our job as parents to guide these young souls to the Lord.   It’s my job to train my kids to love, honor, and obey our Father.  This all really hit home yesterday.   Motherhood isn’t easy by any means and so many days I fall short.  Some days I want to pull my hair out, and some days I wonder if I’m going crazy, but nothing, absolutely nothing, compares to the love I have for my children.  I think about God’s love for us, his children, and although it is much more powerful than any of us could ever imagine, it is so much like the love a mother has for her children.  God’s love makes me want to strive harder to teach my children about love and compassion, but also forgiveness and humility.  Life stinks sometimes, but I want my children to fully understand the power of prayer and the love of God. I want my children to know I will always love them and I will always forgive him, just like Jesus!

As I said above, this all hit home yesterday, and it didn’t stop at church.   Avery and I were outside playing last night.   The night before Avery had discovered that our bird house had a nest in it. I checked it out and didn’t see eggs or baby birds it. Last night, we kept noticing a bird flying in and out, so Avery checked it again.  I got a flashlight to take a closer look and noticed a nest full of baby birds.   Oh, how precious they were.   (Avery and I were very careful not to touch the bird house.) The babies began the chirp the most gorgeous sounds.  And my mind, again, went back to a mother’s love.   I could only imagine the work this mother bird had put into her nest and eggs, to now be rewarded with these beautiful babies that she now cares for.   As I listened to the chirps of new life inside this bird house, I once again felt God’s love and beauty!   What a mighty God we serve!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend as well!

sweet splashes

Avery came along with me to a photoshoot the other day.  He was quite excited to finally go with mama to work.  He's always wanting to "borrow" my camera to take pictures, so I thought he would enjoy tagging along.

After I finished working, Avery wanted to cool off in the water at the park we were at.  I love these pictures of him.  He's so full of life and soaks in every moment he can!

a healthier family

I was contacted by a fellow blog member, Carolyn, and was asked if I would share her passion on my blog.  After talking with Carolyn, about her passion to reach out to families and teach them how to be healthier together, I couldn't pass up this opportunity to share with you all her knowledge on how to be a healthier family.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Becoming Healthier as an Entire Family

Now is about the time when many people begin “slacking off” with their healthy resolutions (believe me, I am including myself in this!). It’s easy to slack off when there is little to no motivation to keep you going.

Living healthy takes a lot of work and this can be difficult if you need to care for your family, grab quick meals and work a full-time job just to support everyone. With March being National Nutrition Month, it’s a great time to think about getting back to living healthier so that your well-being is top priority in your life all year long. Even though the New Year is no longer new, this does not mean that you cannot make healthy and lifelong changes right now!

Getting fit, active and healthy can be something you do with the whole family. When everyone is looking to become healthier, it can actually make things a lot easier for. You will be able to cook healthier meals and snacks without having to cook different things for each person in the family. You will also be able to have a workout buddy every single day so that you are constantly kept motivated. Healthy living is just not fun when the rest of your family is living unhealthy lives. And with obesity rates continuously on the rise, there’s no better time than now to get on the right track to healthy living!

Getting Active

Getting more active as a family can actually be a lot of fun. Exercise is also more motivating when you're doing it with another person, whether that person is your spouse or your children. Setting up a workout plan and schedule can help keep things organized, but try to focus more on incorporating more active things into each day that will also promote.

Running

Running can be done in your local park or just around your neighborhood. When done as a family, you will find that it is more motivating to keep up at a steady pace and to really get your heart pumping.

Yoga

Yoga is quickly becoming one of the most popular exercises out there. You can either watch a yoga DVD at home with the family or you can join a local class. Whatever you choose, your family is sure to reap some awesome benefits. According to doctors from St. Joseph’s Orthopedic Center, yoga has a multitude of benefits including increase strength, flexibility, balance, posture, and even the ability to regulate stress and emotions!

Walking

Walking is a great activity for the whole family because of its low-impact qualities. Just go walking after dinner each night and you will find that this is a habit that you develop quickly. You can even walk the dogs as a family instead of always letting them out in the backyard.

Hiking

Hiking can be a fun activity to do with your entire family. Hiking up mountains and rocks can be a lot of fun, but make sure that you find a trail locally so that you are motivated to actually go. If the hiking trail is an hour away, it becomes more of a trek and you might not want to go as often.

Play Sports

There is nothing more engaging for you and your kids than to play sports. You might want to play baseball in the backyard or do soccer on a local field. Whatever sport you choose, make sure that everyone is willing to join in on the fun!

Dance Often

Dancing is a great exercise because it really helps to get the body moving. When you dance as a family, you will find that it helps everyone to bond closer and to encourage a lot of fun memories. Whether you dance in your living room at random and spontaneous moments, or you join a dancing class, you will find that this is one workout that you will definitely enjoy together.

Keeping Up the Energy – Yummy Snacks

Keeping up your energy and the energy of your loved ones is important when it comes to exercising. Whether you're about to shoot hoops in a local court or you're planning on a hike for the afternoon, you need to fuel the body with the right types of snacks. Before exercising, make it a habit to encourage everyone in the family to eat a delicious protein-packed snack.

One snack in particular that is great for fueling bodies before a workout would be peanut butter and bananas. You can either make a peanut butter and banana sandwich on whole grain toast or you might just want to mash these two ingredients together in a blender with some ice and unsweetened almond milk. The protein and potassium from both of these foods is enough to keep the body energized for hours of exercise.

In order to be healthier as a family, you need to make it a habit to exercise together and eat well. Cook healthier and more natural meals together and make it a hobby to go walking every night after supper. By incorporating these habits into your everyday life, you will find that the whole family benefits from it!

{family history}

I left on a 737 last week headed to New Jersey and New York City. The trip was arranged so that I could attend my great uncles memorial service. With lots of 2nd cousins and 2nd cousins once removed to visit with, my trip was filled with a lot of family memories.

My grandparents must have been very proud of their family, because my cousins found tons and tons of pictures my grandparents had sent up to my great aunt and uncle. I'll post more in the coming days, but here are a few today:

 {my grandparents wedding}

{my dad as a baby}

 {me playing t-ball}

{my grandma graduation Auburn University}

{my aunt, dad, and uncle---does Avery look like dad or what?}

{me as a baby}

The Silver Needle

Life isn't easy. (Trust me!) Sometimes the weight of the world lies right on top of your precious clavicle bones (shoulders) and it pushes down so hard you feel like you are literately carrying 100 extra pounds around. (Ask me how I know, go on, ask me!) I don't do well with stress.  I don't do well with the extra weight on my shoulders.  It's not me; it's not in my DNA.

I needed a less active form of stress release and I can't tell you how much this little embroidery machine I bought has helped my nerves.

I like having a plan.  I like itineraries.  I like list.  All of this to say, can you imagine why I'm an anxious person?  I'm a prime example of ADD.  I can't sit through movies. My mind is always circling itself.

I work.  I go to school (online).  I do Zumba and C25K. I have 2 kids.  I take pictures of families.  And now...I stitch like nobody's business.

I have to keep busy.  This little machine and I have bonded at all hours of the day and night.

We have smiled, laughed, cursed, and cried together.

I'm in love with this little machine.

 I'm in love with making cute creations for precious people.

 And want to know what's even better? This extra weight on my shoulders is getting lighter!

Sho' nuff! It's getting lighter by the day. I'm stitchin' this stressful life of mine back together! I am, I really am!
